How to Treat a Gassy Baby
Aside from all of the adorable sounds your new baby makes, you might have noticed another familiar noise – the bubbling (and releasing) of gas bubbles. Most all babies have some trouble with gas (the scientific term is “flatulence”) at some point, which might cause them pain and discomfort. Here are a few ways that you can treat gas in your baby.
Herb Tea
If you’re breastfeeding, you can drink certain herb teas which will help treat your baby’s gas. While studies on how effective herb teas are at treating baby gas are inconclusive, many mothers swear by them. The most effective anti-gas teas for breastfeeding mothers seem to be fennel, dill seed and anise. Drinking three cups of these teas daily will help calm a gassy breastfed baby.
Simethicone Drops
This is one of the most popular anti-gas treatments used by mothers of gassy babies. Simethicone is a medication that doesn’t enter the bloodstream, which makes it very difficult (or impossible) for a baby to overdose. Simethicone helps soften and combine gas bubbles in your baby’s tummy, making them easier to pass.
Changing Formulas
If you have a formula-fed baby, you will most likely have more issues with gas than the average breastfed baby. Switching to a different formula may be all it takes to help calm your baby’s digestive system. If your baby has a lactose allergy, this can also cause gas – so you might want to try switching to a soy formula.
